Number: 22 .op.
Name: Coffee Opal.
Origin: Mekar Sari Rangasbitang Java Indonesia.
Size: 40 x 40 x 20 mm
Comments: A beautiful gem with a most unusual color from a very unusual locality. This opal appears tobe volcanic in its origin, it is found in volcanic tuff. The opal appears in a number of colors with Coffee Opal being the darkest. It is also associated with some zeolitic material which may also be mixed with it. For the opal purist it is mined out of four by four foot shafts sunk down to a depth of about fifteen feet. How durable it is is open to conjecture. I did see one miner wearing a ring with the local opal, it was not very impressive ,but considering the work that he was doing I am not surprised.
